Policy changes 2012
Please take note of ASA membership policy changes for 2012. Clubs submitting membership information for 100% of their membership will be listed under “Member Clubs” on the ASA website. Clubs submitting less than 100% of membership will be listed on the ASA website as “Other Groups.” To be included on the “Member Club” page, please have two club board members declare by email the club’s intentions to included 100% of their member by March 31, 2012. (We do not need the complete membership list at this time)
ASA and CYA membership cards should be ready for delivery January 1st for sailors attending winter regattas and training camps. Clubs can send us membership information any time and we will issue cards as soon as possible. ASA will invoice clubs for membership March 31st, June 30th and September 5th for the number of new Active names received during the period. We require name and address including postal code and their status as Active or Associate. It is nice to have an email address in case sailors wish to access their CANSail membership records. In the not so distant future, registration for all major events will be done through this database.
Active members are the principle active sailor at the club. The cost is $20 per year and they receive both a CYA and ASA membership card. The rest of the family are Associate members and receive an ASA membership card at no additional charge.

Clubs reporting less than 100% will be listed on the ASA website as “Other Sailing Organizations” with basic contact information. (Discussed at 2011 AGM, approved December 6, 2011)
5.1.4 The Commodore and the Secretary or board member responsible for membership of a Clubs wishing to be listed as a “Member Organization” will annually forward by email to a declaration of 100% membership in ASA. Clubs that have not sent a declaration by March 31st 2012 will be moved from the “Member Organization” to the “Other Sailing Organizations” listing on the ASA website (Discussed at 2011 AGM approved December 6, 2011)
Some background information;
(Policy 5.1.3) It was brought to the attention of the ASA board of directors that all members of clubs that declare and pay for only 10% of their membership are receiving the same benefit as clubs that declare and pay for 100% of their members. The perception is that all members of a club that is a member of ASA, CYA and ISAF are individually members regardless of their contribution to sailing in Canada. Attend a regatta or show up at a club in another province and show your club membership card and you are given rights and privileges not paid for.
Our second membership issue supporting 100% reporting is our grant funding formula. More membership means more funding which in turn means ASA can do more to support our sailing community.
Where clubs have members claiming privacy issues as a reason for not allowing their personal information to go beyond the club we want to assure you that access to the database is limited to the individual and the database administrators. Where concerns arise we suggest your membership application form include an acknowledgement that individual information will be held on the ASA/CYA secure database.
