Alberta Sailing Team

The Alberta Sailing Team is offering support to athletes and club teams training according to CYA’s Long Term Sailor Development model. The LTSD is a guide to athletes, parents, coaches and program organizers for developing athletes to reach their full potential. Please note that training beyond these guidelines is discouraged as it is detrimental to the athlete’s long term development and the sailing community. 

CYA’s Long Term Sailor Development Stages;

Active Start: 0 – 6 Years

Training expectations

- Full range of physical literacy’s
- Comfort in and around water
- Program funding and support may be considers. Tax credits may be available for qualifying programs

Fundamentals: Boys 6 – 9 & Girls 6 – 8 Years Green Fleets

Training and development

- Opti Wet Feet and Opti 1 & 2
- Club based sport and recreation generally in club boats
- Sailor coach ratio max 4:1. Winds 4 - 9 knots
- Training one day per week. 
- Optional multi day and pre event training days
- Learning correct fundamental sailing skills (9 basic sailing skills)
- Tack, gybe, sail to a point, sail to a sail, head up, bear off, stop, go, sail slow
- Physical training activities include stamina, strength, speed, suppleness in on water and shore program
- Mental training develops self confidence, focussing, relaxing and coping
- All athletes are required to have a CANSail number

Competition

- Club evening or weekend racing; one or more inter-club or home and home event and one out of city event per year.
- WSC Open, Intercity, Prairie Winds, Icebreaker, Frostbite, Provincial Championships
- No out of province travel
- Events reward participation, no scoring, skill based obstacle courses. Maximum 3.5 hours on water. Shore activities and games included in event.

Program reporting

- Name, birth date and contact information for all athletes
- Contact information for athlete parents
- Log book of activities
- Year end financial summary of the program revenues and expenses.

Program support

- Where possible we hope to subsidise coach wages for selected coaches and approved programs (Wet Feet and Opti 1 – 2)
- We want to incorporate senior athlete training schedules with work time Fundamental and Learn to Sail Fast coaches
- Allow clubs to charge a reasonable rate for programs and pay a reasonable wage to the coaches regardless of athlete numbers. 
- Subsidised boat purchase end of season MOSS programs
- Club coach subsidy at away events
- Group travel to events

Athlete reporting

- Coach controlled athlete Sailing Log book
- Documenting every on water day Sailing Log book include drawing and simple written notes about the days activities
- Reviewed by ASA coaches
- Training and event expense tracking reports(Parents and programs)
- Summary of program fees and travel to away event costs
- Distance travelled, kids transported, entry fees, lodging

Athlete Support

- ASA and club coaching support at away events
- Athletes can expect to pay for ASA support at training camps and regattas.

Learn to Sail Fast: Boys 9 – 12 & Girls 8 – 11 Years. Optis up to 125 lbs then Laser 4.7 or Radial

All athletes and parents must sign an Athletes Code of Conduct and be registered on the CYA CANSail database. Participants who break the Code of Conduct will not receive financial support and may be bared from participation in ASA events.

Training and development

- Opti White fleet are 9 – 10 and can comfortably start and sail a windward leeward course.
Opti Blue fleet are 11 – 12 years.
- Consistently demonstrates all skills precisely in a full range of conditions. 9 – 14 knots
- Club program includes team building and social activities. Off season engagement, chalk talk, social, dry land training, movies…
- Starting skills; pre-start planning, transits, line favour, consistent front row in small fleets, 75% front row in medium fleets
- Tactics & strategy planning and reactions
- Physical training activities should include stamina, strength, speed, suppleness
- Mental training includes goal setting, concentration, self confidence and self esteem
- Demonstrates appropriate nutrition and hydration practices
- In the final year, participation in off season and extended season training and events is highly recommended.
- Coach athlete ratio max 6:1
- Training time to competition time 8:1

Competition

- Club and interclub training and competition. One to three out of city events. Icebreaker, WSC Open, Intercity, Frostbite, Prairie Winds, Provincial Championships.
- Sail West if in province
- In final year possible attending one or two out of province regattas: Sail West out of province, Pumpkin Bowl, Spring and fall Dinghies, Waves and other prairie events

Program reporting

- Coach log book of training activities
- Year end financial summary of the program revenues and expenses.

Program support

- Daily sailing log book includes wind and water conditions, boat set-up, drills, the daily focus, race plan, outcome, reflection on success, observations. Reviewed monthly by ASA coaches
- Expense tracking reports(Parents) see details below

Athlete Support

- Athletes can expect to pay for ASA support at training camps and regattas.
- Athletes training and competing stage appropriately can share in season end athlete funding pool
- Participation in ASA training camps.
- Coaching support at away events.
- Priority on equipment transport to events.

Learn to Train: Boys 12 – 16 & Girls 11 – 15 Years

All athletes and parents must sign an Athletes Code of Conduct and be registered on the CYA CANSail database. Participants who break the Code of Conduct will not receive financial support and may be bared from participation in ASA events.

Training and development

- Kids in Optis red fleet until 125 Lbs then moving to 4.7, Radial
- Transition from learning boat into appropriate development boat (Pram to race Opti)
- Individual training program within a training group
- Consolidation of racing skills
- Consistent use of training log book
- Planned tactics and strategies
- Read sailing technical articles
- Goal setting with process and outcome goals, self awareness through log booking in daily training log book. Concentration, relaxation, visualization and imagery techniques,
- Managing expectations and coping with competition stress. Developing ideal performance state
- Water and land times
- Train to competition ratio 4:1
- Off season program involvement
- Off season on water training. Victoria winter camp.

Competition

- Racing in club, provincial circuit, provincial, regional, district, class championships. At the end of this stage class Canadian, American and North American championships if within the region.
- Minimum two in province travel to events and max two out of province events; Sail West out of province, Pumpkin Bowl, Spring and fall Dinghies, Waves and other prairie events.
- Performance expectations relate to training and sailing skills not placing at events

- Year end summary of the program participants, activities, revenues and expenses.

Learn to Compete: Boys 16 – 20 & Girls 15 – 19 Years (Senior Team)

All athletes and parents must sign an Athletes Code of Conduct and be registered on the CYA CANSail database. Participants who break the Code of Conduct will not receive financial support and may be bared from participation in ASA events.

Training and development

- Training and competing in size appropriate Olympic stream boats. Laser 4.7 up to 130 Lbs, Radial up to 160 Lbs, Laser up to 200 Lbs, 29er total crew weight 270 – 300 Lbs
- Refining boat handling and technique for speed.
- Double periodization, regattas to win and regattas for development.
- On water training and competition ratio 1:1
- Water and land training 1:1
- Physical training includes Stamina, Skill, Strength, Speed and Suppleness
- Maintaining a mental, physical and performance training log book
- One or two off season training camps or testing regattas

Competition

- Competing in CYA Youth National, World Youth Qualifiers, Canada Summer Games, mid winter training, National Qualifier Regatta (Olympic Classes), National Class Championships, one ISAF grade
one regatta per year (CORK), World champ when in North America, (top qualifiers could consider an event off continent)

Program funding

- Club coach subsidy for at home training and at events
- Group support travel to events

Athlete reporting

- Training Log book books maintained for all training and competition activities. On water, dry-land and related sport activities

Train to Compete: Boys & girls 17+

Competition – top 50% at World Championship

- Application based funding and support.

Train to Win: Canadian Sailing Team Male & Female 20

Athlete funding and financial reporting:

Athlete funding is based on the cost of training and competing at stage appropriate levels. For each athlete we need gather the following information for all development activities in the 2012 season;
- Training team fees and a summary of what is included. Training days, time on water, support with transport and at events…
- Training camp and regatta fees excluding food (unless it is part of a package)
- Travel cost; gas, air travel or other cost of getting to events. Include a support person where required. Travelling as a group???
- Hotel, tenting, billet gifts…
- Recovered costs for transporting other athletes and equipment
- Expenses for training and competition above stage appropriate guidelines will be excluded from funding request.
