CANSail Instructor Clinics
2012-01-14All CYA Dinghy Learn to Sail programs are changing in 2012. CANSail 1 – 6 replaces the old CYA White, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Chutes and Wires 1 and 2 replaces the Bronze 5 material. Student records, checklists and certificates are all online so instructors can update from your I-Phone, tablet, laptop, desk top or whatever toy you use to access the internet. CANSail Instructor packages for each level include lesson plans, drills and schedules that cover the complete stage of development. To deliver these programs instructors need to attend a two day CANSail Crossover Clinic.
Instructor crossover clinics will train current trained and certified instructors coaches in the new CANSail programs that most Alberta schools will be offering in 2012. One day Instructor Crossover training clinics are being offered April 28th in Calgary and May 12th in Edmonton. More dates and location may be available where there is sufficient interest. ASA may be able to assist with travel for candidates living outside of Edmonton and Calgary. For more information contact Alberta Sailing.
Fundamental Coaching Theory; Two and a half days indoors covering Safety, Professionalism, Teaching and Learning. (The revised material is being piloted this month and may result in a shorter, less expensive clinic.) Cost max $200. For candidates living outside of the Edmonton and Calgary areas, ASA may be able to assist with travel expenses while attending clinics. Application must be done before attending the clinic
- March 30 – April 1 Calgary

CYA Coach Boat Safety; A one day or two evening course on how to use a coach boat for teaching, rescue and safety. This course should be completed before the technical clinic and we recommend some power boat driving experience prior to attending this course. Dates and locations to be determined. This certification replaces the Bronze Medallion and Cadet SCOP certifications. See prerequisites list attached. Cost $100. Let us know if you are interested so we can start scheduling courses.
Technical Training Clinics; Two and a Half days on water and land real students practicing and developing your teaching and sailing skills. Cost $200. For candidates living outside of the Edmonton and Calgary areas, ASA may be able to assist with travel expenses while attending clinics. Application must be done before attending the clinic

- July 6 – 8 Edmonton
Other Instructor Prerequisites;
- Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC). ASA may organize clinics where needed.
- Emergency First Aid. Note that some employers will require Standard First Aid.
- Sailing Skills required for each level will be changing every year for the next few years. See the Sailing Skills Prerequisites attached. This is the level of skills candidates are expected to demonstrate. Having the certificate is less important. We will be working on your demonstration skills at the technical clinic.

- Long Term Sailor Development (LTSD) online module. Free module, information will be made available at the Fundamental clinic

Club Membership policy changes for 2012
2011-12-10Please take note of ASA membership policy changes for 2012. Clubs submitting membership information for 100% of their membership will be listed under “Member Clubs” on the ASA website. Clubs submitting less than 100% of membership will be listed on the ASA website as “Other Groups.” To be included on the “Member Club” page, please have two club board members declare by email the club’s intentions to included 100% of their member by March 31, 2012. (We do not need the complete membership list at this time)
ASA and CYA membership cards should be ready for delivery January 1st for sailors attending winter regattas and training camps. Clubs can send us membership information any time and we will issue cards as soon as possible. ASA will invoice clubs for membership March 31st, June 30th and September 5th for the number of new Active names received during the period. We require name and address including postal code and their status as Active or Associate. It is nice to have an email address in case sailors wish to access their CANSail membership records. In the not so distant future, registration for all major events will be done through this database.
Active members are the principle active sailor at the club. The cost is $20 per year and they receive both a CYA and ASA membership card. The rest of the family are Associate members and receive an ASA membership card at no additional charge.
Independent sailors requiring a CYA card for entry to major events can be members of CYA and ISAF directly through membership in Alberta Sailing. Contact .
